A Note on Our Approach
With this documentary, we set out to challenge ourselves and our audience. We've created a hybrid film that deliberately blurs the lines between fiction and reality, mirroring the lived experience of our protagonist who struggles with schizophrenia. By weaving together scripted elements with authentic moments, our film invites viewers to experience the disorienting nature of a mind where perception and reality don't always align. This approach not only serves our storytelling but creates a profound empathy for those living with this complex condition.
We are acutely aware of how sensitive this subject matter is and have approached it with the utmost respect and care throughout the production process. Our director developed a deep bond with our protagonist over an extended period, establishing trust before and during filming.
Many members of our team, myself included, have loved ones who have experienced schizophrenia, which fostered genuine empathy for his situation and informed our ethical approach to the production. For example, after each filming day, our director would personally check in with him to process the experience and ensure his continued comfort with the project.
This hybrid documentary reflects our commitment to portraying the complex reality of schizophrenia with authenticity, while protecting the dignity and wellbeing of those who shared their stories with us.
